Abstract

The report covers an extension of the surface tube technique devised by T. E. Stanton to measure the intensity of skin friction. A simple surface tube is described and a method of varying the surface tube calibration curves to cover other fluids and temperatures is developed. An empirical equation is obtained permitting values of the intensity of skin friction to be determined from surface tube static tapping readings and the width of the opening of the surface tube.

Abstract

IS there anything magic about the shape of a wing section? Asked to sketch the profile of a wing on the back of an envelope, one would have no difficulty in representing a shape which would probably, for most purposes, be adequate. Assuming this generalization to be true—perhaps it is a rather rash one—one might equally well question the need for an article on aerofoil design, or indeed the need for the long and painstaking research which, over the years, has been conducted on this particular subject. But it is this same research which, in the long run, has resulted in the recognition of certain general rules relating to aerofoil geometry, which are now taken so much for granted that they would probably be embodied in one's preconceived notion of what a wing section should look like. Recently, also, rather complicated theoretical techniques have made possible the design of profiles which, if manufactured faithfully and carefully in each detail, can provide a performance which is considerably better than any more arbitrary shaping to general rules would produce. Finally, of course, one must recognize that there are exceptional conditions where the application of conventional ideas is inadvisable, and where theoretical and experimental research is needed to suggest what is more appropriate. This article will be concerned for the most part with amplifying these remarks; but, by and large, it must be admitted at the outset that we cannot point to any revolutionary discontinuities in the progress of aerofoil design such as have characterized advances in the means of aircraft propulsion, or structural design.

Abstract

In the Taguchi’s experimentations, orthogonal arrays, interaction tables, and linear graphs are provided for planning experiments, but they become quite unwieldy when the number of runs is large. The purpose of this article is to propose a quick and easy method for obtaining two‐factor interaction columns in two‐level orthogonal arrays. Geometrical designs proposed by Plackett and Burman are two‐level orthogonal arrays and can be obtained very easily by a successive doubling method. Based on the property of doubling, a NR method using a number representation system whose base is a power of 2 is derived in this article for obtaining two‐factor interaction columns in geometrical designs. Furthermore, since Taguchi’s two‐level orthogonal arrays are obtainable by successive doubling with some column permutations, it is shown that their two‐factor interaction columns can be obtained directly by using the NR method without looking up tables.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide a good insight into solving a multi‐response optimization problem using neuro‐fuzzy model and Taguchi method of experimental design.

Design/methodology/approach

Over the last few years in many manufacturing organizations, multiple response optimization problems were resolved using the past experience and engineering judgment, which leads to increase in uncertainty during the decision‐making process. In this paper, a four‐step procedure is proposed to resolve the parameter design problem involving multiple responses. This approach employs the advantage of both artificial intelligence tool (neuro‐fuzzy model) and Taguchi method of experimental design to tackle problems involving multiple responses optimization.

Findings

The proposed methodology is validated by revisiting a case study to optimize the three responses for a double‐sided surface mount technology of an electronic assembly. Multiple signal‐to‐noise ratios are mapped into a single performance statistic through neuro‐fuzzy based model, to identify the optimal level settings for each parameter. Analysis of variance is finally performed to identify parameters significant to the process.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed model will be validated in future by conducting a real life case study, where multiple responses need to be optimized simultaneously.

Practical implications

It is believed that the proposed procedure in this study can resolve a complex parameter design problem with multiple responses. It can be applied to those areas where there are large data sets and a number of responses are to be optimized simultaneously. In addition, the proposed procedure is relatively simple and can be implemented easily by using ready‐made neural and statistical software like Neuro Work II professional and Minitab.

Originality/value

This study adds to the literature of multi‐optimization problem, where a combination of the neuro‐fuzzy model and Taguchi method is utilized hand‐in‐hand.

Abstract

This research evaluates the value-for-money (VFM) obtained from public-private partnership (PPP) schools in Scotland, based on headteachers questionnaires, local authority interviews and Scottish School Estate Statistics. The period covered is 2000-2012, when 395 new schools were commissioned. The PPPs were better in building condition and maintenance standards and conventionally-financed schools were better in terms of teacher access and improvement in staff morale. There was transfer of knowledge whereby the high standards of the PPPs then became the new standards for the conventionally-financed schools. Concerns about PPP VFM relates to the high cost of unitary charges and contract inflexibilities. A higher percentage of headteachers of conventionally-financed schools (63.64%) considered their new schools resulted in good VFM compared to PPP schools (42.86%).

Abstract

This study investigates the performance of Indiana’s new principals per the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) and the Indiana Content Standards for building-level leader preparation. Using quantitative survey methodology, information was collected from Indiana superintendents regarding the effectiveness of principals who had recently completed university administrative preparation programs. Analysis of responses revealed that superintendents viewed their new principals as “proficient” in almost every area, with the highest mean observed in the category of Integrity. In contrast, the mean response for “financial management” was found to be in the “basic” range, creating implications for an area of potential development in school leadership education in the state.

Abstract

Current literature on youth development supports the theory that out-of-school programming has an effect on youth development. However, little research has been conducted on types of out-of-school programs and comparisons among involvement in various activities in relation to developmental assets. Hence, the purpose of this study was to analyze relationships between students’ participation in out-of-school programs and the development of positive assets. Specifically, this study explored how 4-H participants differ from other students in their attainment of specific assets.

Findings support past research that indicate out-of-school programming is making an impact on the development of youth. Strong differences specific to 4-H participation were not found. Instead, findings indicate that asset development is not the result of one program; rather, it is important to provide a variety of options that ensure a good “fit” for the young person.
